EUN JEONG CHEON, PhD
Researcher in Human Computer Interaction Design

Welcome!
I am a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the School of Information Studies (iSchool) at Syracuse University. As a SU cluster hire in Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, and the Human-Technology Frontier, I am also a core faculty member at Autonomous Systems Policy Institute (ASPI). Previously, I was a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Aalborg University in Denmark.
My research interests include human–computer interaction (HCI), human-robot interaction (HRI), computer–supported cooperative work (CSCW), and science & technology studies (STS). I am interested in how values can and should be incorporated into the design of future technologies. Through my research, I hope to offer alternatives to human-centered designs that contribute to building our relationship with technologies in authentic ways.
I received my Ph.D. in HCI/Design at Indiana University Bloomington where I was advised by Professor Norman Makoto Su. I was also blessed to work with amazing committee members: Erik Stolterman, Selma Šabanović, Jessica Nina Lester, and Mark Ackerman (University of Michigan). I received an M.S. degree in Information Science from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. At UNC, I worked on sociomateriality and smart/ traditional health tracking technologies users with Professor Mohammad Hossein Jarrahi. I graduated with honors from Ewha Womans University, where I began interdisciplinary studies.

Designing and Re-imagining Alternative Futures (DRAFT) lab explores the social and political dimensions of design, engineering, and technology, with a focus on the power dynamics and societal impacts of robotics and AI. Bringing together interdisciplinary methods—including interactive prototyping, ethnographic fieldwork, and social-scientific analysis—the lab investigates how emerging technologies shape labor, workplaces, and public spaces. Our DRAFT Lab aims to inform design, labor practices, and policy to foster more responsible and equitable technological futures.
We're looking for collaborators, as well as undergraduate and graduate research assistants!
